What’s the Difference Between Invisalign and Traditional Braces?

Difference Between Invisalign and Traditional Braces

If you are considering your options for orthodontic treatment – either for yourself or your child – you may be wondering what the difference is between traditional braces and Invisalign. Continue reading to learn more.

What are Braces?

Braces are the traditional method for straightening teeth. Brackets are applied to the surface of the teeth, and the brackets are connected to each other using wire. Over the course of treatment, the wires are gradually tightened, applying continuous pressure that corrects the alignment of the teeth.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign works in a similar fashion – by applying continuous pressure to alter the alignment of the teeth – but it does not use metal brackets or wires. Instead, Invisalign makes use of clear plastic trays that are designed to perfectly fit the patient’s teeth.

Every two weeks, the patient will receive a new set of trays that focuses on correcting a different area of the mouth. This goes on until treatment has been completed.

Diet

When a patient uses braces to straighten their teeth, they will have to avoid certain foods that can potentially break or damage the brackets and wires. This includes chewy or sticky candy, popcorn, and corn on the cob.

Invisalign trays can be removed for eating, allowing the patient to enjoy a mostly unrestricted diet.

Treatment Time

Traditional braces typically take anywhere between 1 and 2 years, though treatment time may vary from patient to patient.

Invisalign treatment time typically falls between 12-18 months, and there are cases in which treatment is completed even sooner.
